Boat transfer from Seatons; participants stand on a shallow sandbar
Stingray City is one of Antigua's signature soft-adventure experiences, set on a shallow sandbar in the sheltered waters off Seatons on the east coast, not far from Long Bay. Trips begin at a land base in Seatons village with a short safety briefing, then a five-to-ten-minute speedboat ride out between the offshore islets to a natural pool with a white-sand bottom, ringed by reef.
Here you stand in waist-deep, bath-warm water while a population of friendly southern stingrays glides around and between you. Guides show you how to hold, feed, and gently stroke the rays, whose velvety skin and curious nature make this a highlight for families and first-time snorkellers. Because the rays are wild and free to come and go, no two visits are quite the same.
Most operators include snorkelling time over the surrounding reef, where you can spot parrotfish, sergeant majors, and the occasional turtle, along with rum punch on the boat afterwards. The water is calm and clear, the experience is suitable for non-swimmers who can stand on the sandbar, and the guides handle the rays daily and know their behaviour well.
Book ahead in the cruise season, bring reef-safe sunscreen and an underwater camera, and listen carefully to the safety talk: the rays are gentle but wild animals. The east-coast location pairs naturally with a visit to nearby Devil's Bridge on the same outing.
No. The experience takes place on a shallow sandbar where you stand in waist-deep water, so non-swimmers are fine. Snorkelling over the nearby reef is optional for those who want to explore further.
The southern stingrays here are gentle and used to visitors, and guides show you how to hold and feed them safely. They are wild animals, though, so follow the safety briefing and the guides' instructions at all times.
Tours start at a land base in Seatons village on the east coast, followed by a five-to-ten-minute speedboat ride out to the sandbar. Book in advance, especially on cruise-ship days when trips fill quickly.
