Reef-protected turquoise water on the east point
Long Bay sits at the easternmost point of Antigua, where a wide, healthy reef runs across the mouth of the bay and tames the Atlantic. The result is the best of both worlds: a refreshing east-coast breeze and views of open ocean, but calm, shallow, brilliantly turquoise water inside the reef that is completely protected for swimming.
That protected, shallow water makes Long Bay one of the safest and most family-friendly beaches on the island, where children can wade and paddle far out in waist-deep turquoise. It also offers some of the finest shore-accessible snorkeling in Antigua: the reef is alive with coral and fish and lies within easy swimming distance of the sand.
Two small hotels and a couple of beach bars sit behind the roughly 800-metre beach, providing drinks, food, and lounger rentals, but the bay keeps a relaxed, low-key feel. Because it faces east, it can occasionally collect sargassum seaweed in season. With its calm water, vivid color, easy snorkeling, and pleasant breeze, Long Bay is a standout on the quieter east coast.
The drive out to the eastern point takes you well away from the busy west-coast resorts, so plan it as part of a day exploring the east, perhaps combined with a boat trip to Green Island or a visit to the dramatic rock arch at Devil's Bridge nearby. There is no lifeguard, but the reef-protected inner water is gentle and shallow. Bring your own snorkel gear, since the reef is the main attraction and lies within easy reach of the sand. For families who want safe, colorful water and great snorkeling without the crowds, Long Bay is one of the best beaches in Antigua.
