St. John's is the capital of Antigua and Barbuda and the island's commercial heart, set around a deep natural harbour on the northwest coast. Most visitors meet it first from the deck of a cruise ship: vessels berth right in town at Heritage Quay, a few steps from the duty-free shops, and at the deepwater pier nearby. For a city of its size it packs in a lot, from colonial architecture to a lively Saturday market, and it makes an easy half-day on foot.
The skyline is defined by St. John's Cathedral, whose two grey Baroque towers have watched over the town since the 1840s. Down at the water, Heritage Quay is the modern duty-free mall aimed at cruise passengers, while neighbouring Redcliffe Quay is the prettier half: restored 18th-century warehouses, once tied to the sugar and slave trades, now filled with boutiques, cafes and craft stalls. The open-air public market at the south end of town is where Antiguans actually shop, piled with mango, soursop, pineapple and fresh fish.
History runs deep here. The excellent Museum of Antigua and Barbuda, housed in the old courthouse, traces the islands from their Amerindian beginnings through the plantation era to independence in 1981. On the headlands guarding the harbour mouth sit the ruins of Fort James and, across the bay, Fort Barrington, both built to protect the colony from the French.
St. John's is not a beach-resort town, and that is rather the point. Use it as a cultural and practical base: change money, stock up at the supermarket, eat roti and pepperpot at a local spot, then drive ten or fifteen minutes to the sand. By night the streets quieten quickly, with most evening life moving out toward the resort strip at Dickenson Bay and the harbours of the south.
Wi-Fi is common in hotels, restaurants and bars. Local prepaid SIMs and eSIMs from Flow and Digicel give good 4G coverage across Antigua; signal is patchier on Barbuda. EU and US roaming can be costly, so a local SIM is worth it for longer stays.
Many restaurants add a 10% service charge to the bill; if not, 10-15% is normal for good service. Tip taxi drivers and tour guides a few US or EC dollars, and leave housekeeping a small daily tip. Prices are quoted in EC$ or US$, so check which before paying.
V.C. Bird International Airport (ANU) sits on the northeast edge of Antigua, only about a fifteen to twenty minute drive from St. John's. Metered taxis wait outside arrivals, or you can pick up a rental car at the airport. There is no scheduled airport bus, but the route into town is short and well signed.
Yes, though plan it as a half-day rather than a full stay. The Cathedral, the historic Redcliffe Quay, the public market and the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda are all worth seeing, and it is the best place on the island to shop, change money and eat local food. Most visitors then drive out to the beaches to relax.
Cruise ships berth right in the centre of town at Heritage Quay and the adjacent deepwater pier, so passengers step off almost straight into the duty-free shopping district. Larger vessels may use the nearby pier, but either way the town centre, Cathedral and Redcliffe Quay are an easy walk away.
The local currency is the East Caribbean dollar (EC$), pegged at about EC$2.70 to US$1, and US dollars are accepted almost everywhere, though change usually comes back in EC$. Tap water in St. John's is generally treated, but many visitors stick to bottled or filtered water to be safe.
Fort James Beach, on the headland just northwest of town, is the nearest swimmable beach and a popular local spot with a couple of beach bars. The resort strip at Dickenson Bay is only a short drive further north, and the secluded coves of the Five Islands Peninsula are also close by.
