Independence Day is Antigua and Barbuda's national holiday, observed on 1 November. It marks the moment in 1981 when the twin-island state ended its association with the United Kingdom: at midnight on 1 November the British flag came down and the new national flag was raised, and the country took its place as a fully sovereign nation.
The day itself centres on a formal Ceremonial Parade and the presentation of National Awards, traditionally held at a major venue in St. John's. Expect marching contingents, military and police bands, dignitaries, and the national anthem performed before crowds dressed in the country's red, black, blue, white, and gold.
Independence is really a season rather than a single day. The surrounding weeks bring food fairs, sports competitions, cultural shows, craft markets, and a Food Fair that showcases Antiguan and Barbudan dishes such as fungie and pepperpot. It is an excellent window for visitors who want to see local culture rather than only the beaches.
The capital is the focus, but the relaxed early-November weather makes it easy to pair the festivities with the nearby coast. A morning at the parade pairs well with an afternoon at Fort James Beach or a visit to the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda to put the history in context.
