Low. Mostly seated touring with short walks at stops. The ride can be bumpy on rough tracks.
An off-road jeep safari is the best way to understand Antigua beyond the resort strip. Open-sided 4x4 vehicles head inland from the capital, St. John's, climbing rough tracks through the island's rolling interior to villages, old plantation country and ridgeline viewpoints. A guide-driver narrates the island's history, agriculture and daily life as you go, with plenty of stops for photos.
Typical routes string together highlights such as the restored sugar windmills at Betty's Hope, the dramatic Atlantic blowhole at Devil's Bridge on the east coast, and high lookout points over the south coast harbours. Many tours also pause at a rum shop or local eatery and finish with time on a quiet beach for a swim.
Because Antigua is compact (about 14 miles across), a half-day safari can cover a surprising slice of the island, while full-day versions add more beaches and a lunch stop. Remember that Antigua drives on the left, so leave the navigation to your guide and enjoy the ride.
Bring sun protection, a hat, a swimsuit and a camera, and expect some dust and bumps on the rougher tracks. For a different angle on the same interior, the rainforest belt is better explored on the canopy zip line or on foot at Wallings Nature Reserve.
