The Frigate Bird Sanctuary, in the Codrington Lagoon on the northwest side of Barbuda, is one of the great wildlife spectacles of the Caribbean. The shallow, mangrove-fringed lagoon shelters one of the largest colonies of magnificent frigatebirds in the world, with thousands of birds nesting among the low mangroves on tiny islets within the protected Codrington Lagoon National Park.
Frigatebirds are unmistakable: huge seabirds with seven-foot wingspans, forked tails, and an effortless, soaring flight. In the breeding season the males inflate a brilliant scarlet throat pouch to attract a mate, and the mangroves fill with displaying birds, fluffy white chicks, and the constant wheeling of adults overhead. It is a noisy, crowded, and unforgettable scene.
The sanctuary can be reached only by boat. Licensed local boatmen run trips from the jetty at Codrington, the island's only village, acting as guides who ease the small craft close to the nesting mangroves without disturbing the birds, so you can watch and photograph them at remarkably close range. The shallow, sheltered lagoon makes for a calm, easy crossing.
The breeding and display season runs from roughly September to April, with the most dramatic activity around December, though birds are present year round. Reaching Barbuda from Antigua means a ferry or a short flight, so most travellers visit as a full-day excursion, often paired with the island's famous pink sand beaches. Bring binoculars, a zoom lens, sun protection, and book a boat trip in advance.
