Low. Flat, calm water suits beginners. Basic balance is needed for stand-up paddleboarding.
Antigua's sheltered west and northwest coasts are made for paddling. Calm, warm, shallow water and a lack of swell mean stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) and kayaking are accessible to complete beginners, while the island's mangrove creeks and offshore islets give more confident paddlers somewhere to explore. Mornings are usually glassiest, before the trade winds build.
Dickenson Bay on the northwest coast is a classic launch point: a long, gentle beach with rental boards and kayaks right on the sand, and flat water that is easy to read. From here and other leeward bays you can paddle along the shoreline, around small offshore rocks, and toward quiet coves you cannot reach on foot.
Guided eco-kayak tours focus on the island's mangroves and the North Sound, where the still water mirrors the sky and you drift past herons, egrets and darting fish among the roots. These tours double as a gentle lesson in why mangroves matter as fish nurseries and storm buffers.
No experience is needed: a quick briefing covers stance, paddling and how to fall off safely. Wear a swimsuit and reef-safe sunscreen, clip on a leash, and bring water. When the breeze picks up, the same coast turns into a playground for kitesurfing and windsurfing or an easy snorkel.
