Nelson's Dockyard National Park is the most important protected area in Antigua and the country's first national park, created under the 1984 National Parks Act. It covers roughly 16 square miles (about 41 km2) of land and sea around the deep inlets of English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour on the south coast. Inside its boundary sit the restored Georgian naval base, hilltop forts, dry tropical woodland, mangrove fringes, and a rugged volcanic shoreline, all managed together rather than as separate sights.
The centrepiece is Nelson's Dockyard, the only continuously working Georgian-era naval dockyard left in the world and, since 2016, the heart of the "Antigua Naval Dockyard and Related Archaeological Sites" UNESCO World Heritage listing. Above it, the restored military lookout at Shirley Heights commands the famous panorama over both harbours. The two are linked by a network of historic defences (Fort Berkeley, Fort Charlotte, the Blockhouse) that once guarded the fleet.
For walkers, the park is the best place to hike in Antigua. The Lookout Trail climbs from Freeman's Bay up the dry hillside to Shirley Heights in 30 to 45 minutes. The Carpenter Rock and Pillars of Hercules routes follow the coast to weathered volcanic rock formations at the harbour mouth, sculpted by the same eruptions that built the island. Acacia, frangipani, and sandbox trees shade the lower paths, while frigatebirds and tropicbirds ride the updrafts off the cliffs.
Most visitors enter through the dockyard with a single national-park ticket that also covers Shirley Heights and the Dow Hill interpretation centre, so one fee unlocks the whole area. Two sheltered beaches sit just inside the park: Galleon Beach at the foot of the Lookout Trail and quiet Pigeon Point Beach on Falmouth Harbour. Allow at least half a day; combine the dockyard, a coastal trail, and a sunset at the heights for the full picture.
