Discovering Paradise
A hidden, calm-water cove on the sunset coast
Hermitage Bay is one of the most secluded beaches on Antigua's leeward coast, a small curve of soft, pale sand wrapped by wooded hillsides about 2.5 km (1.5 miles) north of Jolly Harbour. Because it faces west into the Caribbean and sits deep inside a sheltered cove, there is effectively no surf here. The water stays calm, clear, and glassy through most of the day, which makes it a dreamlike spot for an unhurried swim or a long float beneath the hills.
The bay is home to the Hermitage Bay resort, whose cottages climb the slope behind the sand, but as on every shoreline in the country the beach itself is public by law. Getting here is the catch: there is no easy roadside parking, so most visitors reach it by a rough off-road track or by boat, and the simplest land route runs through the resort itself. That difficulty is exactly what keeps the bay so quiet, even when busier beaches fill up.
Calm, transparent water makes Hermitage Bay a gentle place to swim, and the rocky edges of the cove are worth exploring slowly with a mask; for more ideas across the island, see our guide to snorkeling in Antigua. There are few facilities for casual visitors beyond what the resort provides, so treat this as a tranquil, bring-your-own kind of beach day rather than a service-heavy one.
The bay sits within easy reach of the Five Islands peninsula and the marina town of Jolly Harbour just to the south, so it slots neatly into a west-coast itinerary. Come for the morning calm and the soft afternoon light, and because this is a sunset-side bay, linger as the sky turns gold over the water before you head back.
