Powder sand and glowing turquoise shallows
Valley Church Beach is a showstopper: a wide ribbon of fine, powder-white sand meeting astonishingly pale, turquoise shallows on the calm southwest coast. The water is so clear and the colors so vivid that it regularly appears on lists of Antigua's most beautiful beaches. It sits just north of Ffryes Beach, south of Jolly Harbour.
The shallow, gently shelving water stays calm and warm, making it superb for swimming and ideal for families with small children who can wade out a long way in waist-deep turquoise. A popular beach bar, The Nest, sits behind the sand serving drinks and food, and loungers are usually available to rent.
The beach can get busy on cruise days because tour operators bring groups here for its looks and its easy water, so come early for the calmest, emptiest conditions and the best light. Natural shade is limited beyond the bar and a few sea-grape trees, so bring an umbrella. For sheer Caribbean postcard beauty with safe, family-friendly swimming, Valley Church is hard to beat.
Parking is free at the lot and roadside, and the beach is an easy drive south of Jolly Harbour. There is no lifeguard, but the shallow, calm water is among the most forgiving on the island for young swimmers. Snorkelers can explore the rocks at either end of the bay, where small fish gather. Because Valley Church and Ffryes sit back to back, the smartest plan is to spend the morning on the quieter, brighter sands of Valley Church, then drift over to Ffryes for sunset, giving you the best of two of Antigua's prettiest beaches in a single day.
