Low to moderate. Reeling in big-game fish can be strenuous; the rest is seated. Open-water conditions can be lively.
The deep water off Antigua drops away quickly close to shore, putting big-game fish within easy reach of a morning charter. Sport-fishing boats run year-round from west-coast marinas, chiefly Jolly Harbour, as well as from the south coast around English Harbour, targeting blue and white marlin, sailfish, mahi-mahi (dorado), wahoo, and yellowfin tuna.
Charters are typically private and come in half-day (around four hours) and full-day (around eight hours) formats. The crew supplies rods, reels, tackle, bait and usually drinks and ice, so you can show up with nothing more than sun protection. Trolling along the drop-offs and current lines is the standard technique, and many operators practise tag-and-release for billfish.
Seasonality shifts the catch: wahoo and tuna are often strongest in the cooler months, while mahi-mahi and marlin show well in spring and summer. Antigua's calmer leeward side usually means an easier ride out, though the open Atlantic can be lumpy, so pack motion-sickness medication if you are prone to it.
Fishing pairs well with the island's wider boating scene. If you would rather cruise than cast, consider a catamaran day cruise, or build a full sailing holiday around a yacht charter.
