Discovering Paradise
Calm, clear water and casual bars on the southwest coast
Johnson's Point sits on Antigua's southwest Caribbean coast, just south of the village of Crab Hill and tucked between two of the island's prettiest stretches of sand, Ffryes Beach and Darkwood Beach. Because this leeward shore faces the Caribbean rather than the Atlantic, the water stays calm, clear, and warm, shelving gently from the white sand into shallow turquoise that is ideal for an unhurried swim.
This is a low-key, local-leaning beach rather than a resort strip. A couple of casual beach bars sit back from the sand, the kind of barefoot spots where you can settle in with a cold drink, fresh-grilled seafood, and reggae drifting across the bay. The relaxed pace and the absence of crowds are the whole appeal: most days you can find a quiet patch of sand and have the shallows largely to yourself.
The gentle shelving and protected, glassy water make Johnson's Point a forgiving place to swim and an easy choice for families. Like all beaches in Antigua, it is public by law, so access is free even where the sand is fronted by villas. Natural shade is limited beyond the bars and a few sea-grape trees, so an umbrella helps in the middle of the day. There is no lifeguard, but the calm leeward water keeps conditions easy.
The beach is a short drive south of the Jolly Harbour marina village, which makes it simple to fold into a day of bar-hopping along the southwest coast. Because it faces west, late afternoon is the prize: the breeze drops, the water turns to glass, and the sun sets straight out over the Caribbean. Pair a swim here with neighboring Ffryes and Darkwood, and you have one of the most rewarding low-key beach circuits on the island.
