Discovering Paradise
Palm-fringed crescent framed by green hills
Carlisle Bay arcs along the base of a deep, sheltered bay on Antigua's south coast, near the village of Old Road. A roughly one-kilometre crescent of pale sand is backed by a dense fringe of coconut palms and framed by steep green hills, giving it a serene, almost secluded character. The bay's protected shape keeps the water calm and clear.
An intricate reef system in and around the bay makes for good snorkeling, with a variety of tropical fish in the clear shallows. The acclaimed Carlisle Bay resort fronts the beach, lending the area a quiet, upscale atmosphere, but as on every Antiguan beach the sand and water are public and open to all.
This is one of the more tranquil south-coast beaches, well suited to relaxed swimming, snorkeling, and long walks beneath the palms. Public facilities are limited outside the resort, so bring water and supplies. The combination of calm water, abundant palm shade, reef life, and a beautiful hill-framed setting makes Carlisle Bay a standout on the south coast.
Reaching the beach involves a drive to Old Road on the south coast, and public parking is limited, so come earlier in the day. There is no lifeguard, but the sheltered bay keeps the water calm. Carlisle Bay pairs well with a visit to nearby Morris Bay just to the west, or with the historic sites around English Harbour a little further east. Snorkelers should bring their own gear to make the most of the reef. For travelers who value shade, calm water, and a peaceful, scenic setting over bars and bustle, Carlisle Bay is one of the most restful beaches on the island.
